We offer a post-doctoral position at the IRESNE Institute of the CEA (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives) in Cadarache (France). It will focus on taking advantage of the recent advances in Tensor Methods –Quantic Tensor Train methods– for solving multiscale partial differential equations arising in nuclear fuel simulation. Tensor Methods are advanced numerical techniques for compressing functions, which give rise to highly efficient linear algebra. The project aims at adapting these techniques to an applied problem: thermomechanical simulation of nuclear fuels. The main difficulty –and interest– of the problem is to represent an object made of microstructured material, the scale of which is far smaller than the scale of the object.
Position The postdoctoral research will be in charge of the following tasks:
- participate in building a multiscale Partial Differential Equation solver based on Quantic Tensor Train,
- conduct research in that perspective, in collaboration with the other members of the team,
- contribute to the preparation of papers and reports.
The appointment is for 1 year and it can be renewed for 1 year. The anticipated starting date is between 02/2025 and 12/2025.
Profile The applicant should have a PhD in either Applied or Pure Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics, and show a genuine interest for transdisciplinary projects. A strong background in Scientific Computing or Numerical Analysis is mandatory. Ideally, the applicant will be experienced with Tensor Methods or Hierarchical Matrices. Familiarity with either elliptic Partial Differential Equations, High-Performance Computing, or Quantum Mechanics, will be favorably considered.
Applying Applications, including a cover letter, a CV and a minimum of two letters of recommendation should be sent electronically to marc.josien@cea.fr. We will start reviewing the applications on 01/2025. Applications will, however, be accepted until the position is filled.

About CEA/IRESNE The CEA is a major research organisation working in the best interests of the French State, its economy and citizens. Thanks to its strong roots in fundamental research, it is able to provide tangible solutions to meet their needs in four key fields: low-carbon energy (nuclear and renewable), digital technology, technology for medicine of the future, defence and national security. The IRESNE Institute specializes in nuclear energy. It is entirely based on the CEA site in Cadarache, 30 minutes from Aix-en-Provence in the south of France.
